What is Tigernuts?
Known in Spain as Chufa, Tigernut is not a nut, it is a root vegetable. It existed more than thousands of years ago since its origin in Africa. Tigernuts are grown in a field and harvested in the same way as a potato or yam.
Tigernuts from Egypt were brought to Spain as a cultivated grain thousands of years ago. In the 1200s, a drink called "Horchata", which was squeezed using tigernuts, was borned. The name "Horchata" were given by James I, who ruled the Valencia region from what is now know as Catalan, when he praised the tigernuts drink, . "Horchata" is made only with tigernuts and water. A sweet and delicious drink.
Tigernuts are harvested once a year. It sows seeds in spring and grows in autumn. The fields are dried around October, and the fields are burned down around December to prepare for harvesting. After that, it will be harvested by around March. After harvesting, they are washed with water many times and dry. Drying is done by natural manual drying. By carefully controlling the temperature and humidity, the whole process of drying takes more than 3 months.
Tigernuts are high in fibre, lower in Sodium and lower in Saturated Fat. It is a perfect choice for anyone following a green diet.
A healthy lifestyle with Tigernuts
Tigernuts contain high Fiber and low in Sodium and Saturated Fat.
Tigernuts are flexible and can be added to your diet in many ways. They can be eaten raw by soaking them in water first, or turn them into Tigernut milk aka horchata de chufa. Today, Tigernuts are also used and added to pastries, smoothie, yogurt, ice-cream and salad.
The popularity and interest of Tigernuts are gaining each day, with more people looking at choosing a more healthier choice.
Knowing how to make Tigernuts milk
Soak the tigernuts for 24-48 hours
Prepare 250g of tigernuts and soak the tigernuts in basin of water for 24-48hours
Prepare the ingredients
Drain the tigernuts after soaking. Prepare 1000ml(per 250g of tigernuts) of cold drinking water.
Blend the tigernuts
Pour the tigernuts into the mixer. Add the water in. Turn on mixer and blend for approx 2mins.(Blending time varies depending on the mixer)
Filter the tigernuts juice
Transfer the blended tigernuts to a Chufamixer container. Strain and filter out the tigernuts milk.
